Education system in Germany: part 2
Education system in Germany: part 2

On my last post I wrote about the Grundschule (Primary school). In this post I will write about the 3 different school forms in Germany.

After graduating year 4, you have the choice to go to a Gymnasium, a Realschule or a Hauptschule. Let us start with the Hauptschule.

In order to qualify to a Hauptschule, you will need a successful year 4 school report.

In Hauptschule students get a general education in all subjects. They are educated in Deutsch (German), Mathe (Maths), Englisch (English), Biologie (Biology), Physik (Physics), Chemie (Chemistry), Kunst (Art) or Musik (Music), Politik und Wirtschaft (Politics and economics), Geschichte (History), Erdkunde (Geography), Ethik (ethics), Evangelisch oder Katholische Religion (Protestant or catholic religious studies), Arbeitslehre (Business and employment studies) and Sport (Sports). A student goes to a Hauptschule till year 9 (Age: 14-15) and then he or she has the choice to go to year 10 at a Realschule (you need specific requirements to go to year 10) or he or she can start working as a trainee.

Let’s talk about the Realschule. In order qualify to a Realschule, you will need a successful year 4 school report.

In Realschule you get a more general knowledge in every subject. The subjects of Realschule and Hauptschule are the same. At Realschule you can also start learning a 2. Foreign language but a 2.Foreign language isn’t compulsory. Realschule students complete school at the age of 15-16 when they are in year 10 and after they complete year 10, they have the possibility to go to a Gymnasium (you need good marks on your school report and you need to know at least 2 foreign languages in order to go to a Gymnasium). If they don’t go to a Gymnasium, students can start a trainee programme at any firm.

Coming to Gymnasium

In order to qualify for a Gymnasium, a year 4 student needs a good and successful year 4 school report. In Gymnasium students get a very detailed education in every subject. They are taught in Deutsch (German), Englisch (English), Französisch (French) or Spanisch (Spanish), Darstellendes Spiel (Drama)/ Kunst (Arts)/ Musik (Music), Politik und Wirtschaft (Politics and economics), Geschichte (History), Erdkunde (Geography), Ethik (Ethics) or Katholische Religion (Catholic religion)/ Evangelische Religion (Protestant religion), Philosophie (Philosophy), Mathe (Maths), Biologie (Biology), Physik (Physics), Chemie (Chemistry), Informatik (Computer science) and Sport (sports). A student studies at a Gymnasium till year 13 (Age: 17-19) and then he gets his or her Abitur (A-Levels (GBR) or High school Diploma (USA)). After acquiring the Abitur, a student can go to a University.

So if you want to start working at a very early age, you should think about going to a Hauptschule or a Realschule. If you are thinking about going to a University, then you should think about going to a Gymnasium.
